Adobe Air: The web outside of a Browser

I teach Web technologies, and so far you are limited to doing your stuff inside of a Browser. Well Adobe Air is all about making those application live outside of the Browser. This is quite possibly the one development tool need for a multi-platform world.

Java has so much promise and it still delivers, but when I heard about this new tool from Adobe, I was curious. The idea behind this is that you can use whatever tool for web development that you are used to. If you are an HTML and javascript person like AJAX, then you are welcome. Do you develop your sites using Flash, Welcome. Do you Use Flex, you are welcome too.

All web display technologies have to be platform independent, but once you remove them from the browser’s box, then you have several operating systems to deal with, and that is the scary part. Adobe’s AIR product tries to allow these to happen in as easy a fashion as possible. It accomplishes this with a runtime. Your Air apps run inside of an Air runtime built for your platform. The app does not have to be built for your system, just the runtime.

I can see this going somewhere so I will be using this product over the course of a few months. there is a product that I want to provide, but I am looking for cross platform capabilities. A lot of Twitter clients are being built for this product. Twhirl is one of these. So keep watching this space for more updates on using Adobe Air.
