How I use DevonThink

I’ve liked DevonThink from the first time I used it. The Main problem was that it did not handle some of the unusual files I was using. So I found EagleFiler and use it. DevonThink has come back into my office because of the promise of DevonThink 2.0

Primarily I use DevonThink as a file aggregator and search tool. It is possible for instance to drop a directory into an open DevonThink window and the program will set up groups and bring the files into the database. During this time it is processing the documents for search as well as organizing the files in the devonthink database file. One your files have been brought into Devonthink and your databases archived, it is safe to delete the original files and directories.

Where I rally make use of Devonthink capabilities is in the zero paper office initiative that I am undertaking. You can scan directly into DevonThink creating a pdf that has had the OCR run on it. This produces a pdf with text that DevonThink uses in its search. This has removed a lot of paper from my files

Another way that I use it is as an organizing tool for my writing as well as my notes. I write notes using the Pulse smartpen. I can convert such handwritten notes into text and then take those files into DevonThink where it becomes part of my library for searching.

Another I can do is to use Devonthink as an alternative Inbox for my email. I could take certain emails out of my inbox and put them into a DevonThink database. I haven’t done this yet, because I am waiting for DevonThink to complete it’s beta before I start trusting my emails to the Devonthink system.
