I am finding that I much prefer Eaglefiler than Devonthink. Price is one thing. The other is the way Eaglefiler seems to be a better computer citizen. As far as integrated scanning, on C-Command's site are some scripts that can be used to allow for scanning into Eaglefiler.

I have been using Devonthink for several years now and I am switching to Eagle Filer.

Devonthink is really promising in its feature set, but it doesn't keep many of those promises. I have around 100.000 files to manage, that is text snippets, technical manuals, images found on the web plus a collection of articels as PDF and Web Archives. If I put that into one database in Devon, it consumes most of the 4GB RAM of my Macbook Pro. I created several databases with around 10.000 items, but that doesn't really solve the problem, instead it renders the search capabilities useless because you can only search open databases. I can't access/search items in the databases from the finder, at least not in a way that makes sense, so I need to open several databases if I'm not sure where I put something. Devonthink would make sense if I could run it in the background at all times, giving me the chance of getting my infos whenever I need to. But when Devon runs, there is not much resources left for other applications.

Devon randomly consumes 100% CPU power for no obvious reason. It hangs frequently showing the beach ball during routine operations like importing PDFs etc.. I find the GUI inconsistent due to the fact that Devon incorporates many different standard technologies provided by Apple. e.g. the keyboard shortcuts for viewing PDFs are different from those when viewing web sites or text files.

I hope Eagle Filer will behave better. At least I can access my files gracefully through the finder, reducing the need of starting the application.

Good points. That's part of the sparse bundle format that Devonthink's files is based on.

You can get to your files via the finder when using DEVONthink (2.0). They are stored in a package, but you can Show Package Contents and get to them. Also, you can Show in Finder from DEVONthink.

OCR is really only supported for the DevonThink Pro product or the Pro office. You are spot on though about Devonthink superior OCR capabilities, and integrated scanning

Pretty good assessment. One more to add:

Do you need integrated scanning and OCR support? DEVONthink
