The 5 Cards of Knowledge system

As I have said before I am an inveterate note taker. I have filled notebooks with my notes and other pieces of information. The one thing that my notebooks can’t do is change paper. I prefer bound notebooks and so the paper cannot be shifted around. How do I move information from one notebook to the other? Read on and find outMy notebooks of late have been the Moleskine brand of bound notebooks. Each of these notebooks has a pocket into which you can put paper or even index cards. I found that I can stick five index cards into this pocket on a small size notebook without too much trouble. Any more and the pocket is a little too distended to close all that well.

I call these five cards the cards of Knowledge because I put in them information that I wish to remember. When I finish one notebook, I move the cards to the new notebook, and there you go. These five cards contain information that I consider to be important to me. Here are the cards that are in my notebook right now:

  • Card 1 Personal information
  • Card 2 Customer information.
  • Card 3 Physics formulae
  • Card 4 Relational Database information
  • Card 5 Design patterns

This list is all that is currently in my five card deck, but the main idea is that I have five cards of information. I may switch out cards depending on where I am going and what I may be doing.

See if the notebook you are carrying has a pocket and see if you can put index cards into that pocket. Then think about putting information onto those cards. Also see how many you can carry before the notebook becomes a little bit unwieldy.

Do you put index cards into your notebooks to remember information and be able to move them at need? If you do comment below, or share this post with others.
