There are 5 things I look for in a bag before it becomes part of my rotation. I think that you will benefit from the things I look for.
- Will the laptop fit?
- Is it the correct form factor?
- Does it have enough room for the gadgets I need to carry?
- Is it made of the correct material?
- Does it look cool?
Manufacturers of the bags sometimes say things that are a little ambiguous like will fit a 15″ laptop. There are many different makes of 15″ laptops. So you need to make sure that it will fit your laptop. Measure your laptop’s dimensions and have those put on your cards of knowledge. Then you can know if the bag will hold your laptop.
Form factor can be a big issue. For me I used to love over the shoulder bags, but as I have aged, those bags no longer suit me any more. My form factor has changed to roll arounds. With the amount of things I need to bring with me, roll around is the only way I can carry that large amount of stuff. I never considered using a hand carry bag once I found my shoulder bag, and then the roll arounds.
I need to carry at a minimum my kindle, phone, iPod, and several different usb thumb drives of various sizes and formats. There are the pens, pencils and refills for same. Then there are the notebooks at which the daily notebook is a must. The next question is is there enough room to carry essentially the rest of my office. If that is true, then the bag must be considered. Look at the gadgets you must carry and ask if the bag can carry it for you.
For me the material is is made of is very important. I happen to like leather goods. I like how it wears and how if feels. Most of my bags are leather. There are a few canvas bags with leather appointments. My roll around is made from a cordura type of material. My bags have to take a lot of punishment. I travel in all kinds of weather, so I keep that in mind when I buy a bag.
The last item is one that might not be the most important, but it is for me. If you don’t like it’s looks then how will you carry it with pride? Get what you like, especially if it meets the other three criteria.
