The space bar is not just for spaces any more. In Mac OSX the space bar can be used to modify other commands to make them do tremendous thing. here are the five thingIn an App that has a playback system, the space bar is used to toggle playing or pausing. If the system is not playing anything, pressing the space bar will cause it to play. If it is playing, then pressing space bar pauses the playback. This goes for just about any playback system on the Mac OSX

the second thing a space bar can do is alter the way the screenshot keystorkes work. cmd+ shift+4 starts you in the screen shot mode. pressing space bar after that key combo will capture an entire window, rather than what you drag select

The next one is interesting in that it works with Expose. Invoke Expose. I use the F9 key. Then hover over one of the small windows and press space bar to zoom up the window. This works best if you have a lot of windows open and want to get to a particular window without moving off the keyboard.

The last one is a little esoteric, but it does come in handy. If you want to select something and toggle it’s condition, the space bar can be use to toggles a control’s condition. You need to go to Keyboard in the System Prefs pane. Go to the keyboard short cuts. At the bottom of the pane select all controls.  This will now activate the space bar’s ability to work with the control to toggle state, or act as a button push.
