What do the numbers mean for HDTV

You may be hearing a lot about 720p and 1080p or 1080i. What does all that mean, and why should you care? I’ll be answering that after the break.

Let’s talk about the letters first. p and i are used and do have a meaning. They have to do with refresh rates and screen redraw. The refresh rates is how fast your screen is being updated. p which stands for progressive, means that you screen is completely being redrawn per screen refresh. i means that you screan is being interlaced. Every other line is being redrawn per refresh. Thus i screens take two refreshes to draw one screen.

The numbers mean that those are the horizontal lines your screen has. Either 720 0r 1080. The more lines the higher resolution.

What does all that mean? It means that 1080p is the best and 720i is the worst. Now if you are buying a screen less than 50″, then you might be paying for more than you need. 720p and 1080p look similar at smaller than 50″.
