It seems that people like Lists and so, not to be outdone, I present my list of what I consider to be essential software for Every Mac TechWarrior as of the date of this post. This list was not hard to make. I simply looked at my work habits and realized that these 5 are software I would sorely miss. The list is after the break
1. Things- Cultured Code $50 for Mac $10 for iPhone. In the world of to do management I find that you need to have a solution that includes your smart phone. Things provides that it spades. I like powerful software that is uncluttered and allows me to use it’s power my way. Things on the surface might seem to be using the GTD system, but you can easily use any way that works for you. You just have to use it. The syncing between the mac and iPhone is an simple as opening both programs on each device.
2. EagleFiler – C-Command $40. This is my central repository for everything, all my work. It’s searching tools are extraordinary. i like the fact that EagleFiler uses the OS’s tools to help you structure your information. You can set up folder and put your files in these folder within EagleFiler, and they’re true directories in the managed Directory. That means that once your file is in the directories of EagleFiler they are accessible outside of EagleFiler just like a normal directory. Once you start using this tool you will have to get used to one limitation. In order for EagleFiler to do it’s job it needs to remove and import files. Getting files into EagleFiler is a snap with it’s one key import, or the to import folder, or the drop pad.
3. iWork – Apple $79. I work with Text documents, spreadsheets and presentations, and I am finding that I really haven’t given up much my moving from MS Office to iWork. The UI is very useable, very clean and uncluttered, until you open all the property inspectors and side drawer tools. Then it reveals it’s power. Some TechWarriors might balk at the price, and for the budget conscious there is OpenOffice from OpenOffice.org, a true, complete replacement for MS Office.
4. Acorn – Flying Meat.com $49.95 Free edition available. I take a lot of photos and screenshots. This easy to use, but powerful image editor does a lot for me. It works with just about every graphics tablet that works on the Mac. It is AppleScript-able. And actually competes very well with other image editors. this is a tool much in use at TechWarrior Central, since I work with a lot of photos and images.
5. MarsEdit – Red Sweater Software $29.95. If you blog you will quickly tire of the editor that comes with your Blog software. MarsEdit is a blog publishing software that allows you to edit your posts and then upload them to your blog. MarsEdit supports most of the blog software out there. This is an indispensable tool for a blogger.
That is the five essential TechWarrior tools. Go out there, be prepared, and do good work.
