I thought I would begin this week with a how to. A lot of people start blogs and just as many let them go. It is imperative that you keep your blog alive, or you will loose readership, but I am getting ahead of myself. After the break some consideration on how to start a blog.
The first consideration on starting to blog is what do you want to blog about. It has to be something that you are passionate about. You have to be somewhat of an expert about it, or are willing to learn about it and share what you learned on your blog. If you are blogging about your family that may be okay for your family, but not everyone will be interested in that topic. Whereas if you are a model railroader, then blogging about kit-bashing, and building a layout is a subject that there will be plenty of readers for.
Do you have a take on the subject that you wish to cover in your blog? For me I wanted to cover technology, computers, and programming. My take was the TechWarrior concept. I now have literally thousands of things I can blog about at any given moment. I am passionate about this and it it easy to write the posts that I put on my blog. When I did a podcast about project management for normal life I was not passionate and I ran out of things to podcast about. Passion makes the blog more personal, better, and more fun to read.
There is one more thing I want you to do. I want you to write out in as few sentences as possible just what you blog is about. Then I want you to come up with ten ideas for posts on this site. If you can’t come up with ten posts for this site in about an hour, then you might not have the correct idea of what your blog is about. Tweek the mission statement around until those ten ideas just flow out of your mind onto paper.
Blogs do require some layout of cash, unless you decide to go the blogspot.com or WordPress.com route. If you are trying to make money on your blog, then these free hosting services do limit you on just what you can do. However the free hosting service are a good way to get your feet wet without a lot of outlay of capital. If you are in a hurry then you might want to get an account on a paid hosting service like siteground.com, or godaddy.com. Then you need to use some sort of blogging software to run on these servers. I can recommend WordPress.org. The full WordPress content management system makes it easy to start, and maintain a professional Blogging site.
There is a lot more for me to say here, and I will say more, but this is one more thing to learn. Always keep your readers wanting more. It keeps them around longer.
