If you have a Macintosh you had a chance to get the OpenOffice goodness from almos the beginning of OpenOffice. Planamesa ported the OpenOffice to the Macintosh many years before OpenOffice provided a Mac OSX version of the product. When OpenOffice provided a Mac Version I thought that NeoOffice might go away, but it has not. Happily NeoOffice is till going strong and I’ll tell you why you might like it over OpenOffice after the break.
Make no bones about it, OpenOffice is a great product, but it is not a Mac Native product. Yes, they provide a version for Mac OSX, but it really is not a Mac Native product. NeoOffice attempts to bring the OpenOffice engine completely into the Mac Fold. I must admit that when I use NeoOffice it looks and feels like a native Mac app. Although, I can see the OpenOffice underpinnings I am not seeing much of the quirkiness that I see when I use OpenOffice for the Mac.

One of the things that Planamesa is doing to make themselves a little different from OpenOffice is the idea of NeoOffice Mobile. This is essentially publishing your documents to a server and having them available from any Mac running NeoOffice, or any computer running a browser, or mobile device running a web browser. You can use it for free, but uploaded documents expire in two days and you are limited to 10 megabytes of storage. If you donate to NeoOffice, then you get more storage and longer expiration dates. If you need this service then it is worth it to donate.
NeoOffice has everything that OpenOffice has. It has the formula editor as well as Base. These are my two biggies. If you are looking for an OpenOffice for the Mac, you might want to give NeoOffice.org a try.
