Perhaps you may not have noticed but I do not have a large Twitter following. I have more tweets than followers and you might be wondering why. I have several answers to that and I will elucidate you after the break.
Twitter is an unusual phenomenon. I have never seen so many people willing to put their private lives before people in such numbers and intimacy. When I first came on to Twitter I wondered what I would use it for. Then I had an idea which was prompted by the WordPress plugin Tweetable. It promised to show my last few tweets on my blog, and to tweet when a new post was available. This was when I saw use for Twitter beyond tweeting what I was having for breakfast.
I decided that I would use Twitter to tell people about my blog, business, and myself. Within days I was bombarded with tweets and follows from people who promised me tons of followers. The problem I saw with that is that I would get those tons and would shed them relatively quickly. I then decided that I would not follow first. Rather I would follow back all those who followed me.

There are two reasons I did this. I was still groping around trying to find the tools to help me manage these tweets and followers. I have since found my tools. The other reason was that I wanted followers who thought I was useful to them. I wanted them to stick around. I wanted them to go to my site, because there was information there of use to them.
My followers follow me because that is what I do provide. The number of clicks on my posts that I tweet about show me that I do provide that. I am not trying to do things fast. I am trying to do things my way and find my audience. I am an private educator. I am fairly successful teaching people how to do things on a computer. At first my tweets brought about the butterflies. They came, and then they twitted away. Now I am seeing that some are staying and going through other posts. That is all I want.
Trust me I would like my website to generate a lot of money, but seeing people come to the website and read the articles is just as good. The few that stayed to leave comments are treasured as well which is why comments are enabled on all posts, even for those people who hate my posts.
I use Twitter as another subscription mechanism for my website. I also use it to show my mood, and those bits of wisdom that percolate through my mind and study. I also use it to touch base with those people who think differently from me. Follow @haebben. I’ll follow you back.
