Something new: PdfPen and EagleFiler

As long time readers of this blog know I am a notetaker. I love to look at new note taking programs, but I always seem to come back to my dynamic duo of EagleFiler and DevonThink. Well it might be goodbye to Devonthink. I always keep my eye on the price of any solution I recommend, as well as any thing that might be a hindrance. While I like the ability to scan into Devonthink and then ocr the pdf created, I can now do the same thing for a lot less money. After the Break the solution will be discussed

The solutions begins with one more software purchase. You’ve bought the EagleFiler software for $40 from C-Command Software. You’ve set up a library, and have been dropping folders filled with your files into it. The next purchase is going to be PdfPen from Smile on my Mac. This is a $50 dollar purchase. Hopefully you got a scanner as well. One with a duplex automatic document feeder would be real nice or one of the scansnaps from fujitsu.

Michael Tsai occasionally writes Applescript that do certain things. In answer to a query he created an applescript that can ocr with PDFpen a pdf created with your scanner and bring it into EagleFiler. If you have EagleFiler, I recommend that you sign up for his forum and then peruse those forums. Michael is always responding there, and providing help. You can always peruse this website, because I don’t think I will be dumping EagleFiler any time soon.

I would take that applescript from the c-command website and compile it to an application. That way you can dump pdfs onto icon and run the script on those files. I working on one which will use folder actions. That way you can scan to that folder, and it will ocr and import into EagleFiler. It’s not ready, yet. I got a lot on my plate right now, so it may take some time.

So it seems that Devonthink can be put away and replaced with the one – two punch of EagleFiler and PDFpen. PDFpen does other things than ocr, but right now that is my biggest use for it. Don’t get the pro version unless you need what it can do.
