I love pencils. Throughout my life pencils were permitted to be used anywhere. Because of that simple fact Pencils seem to give me permission to write notes anywhere. They are a main staple of my pocket. While I prefer to use the wooden pencils, They neither fit my pocket, nor my bag. To that end I have had to use mechanical pencils. What to look for in a mechanical pencil after the break.

It wasn’t until I got out of the Navy and began to write my own notes on memo books I bought that I got inhibited from using pens. For me Pencils gave me license to write in the those wonderful bound books that I found over the years. I love the Ticonderoga wooden pencils, and would prefer to use them except that I have to bring a sharpener. That’s weight I don’t want to carry around.
For a while I did not mind using a Cross Pen and Pencil Set, but that soon lost it’s allure. The small leads were too small and I was breaking them constantly. For a while I was using 0.7mm leads, then I noticed a new size coming on the market.
This new size was the 0.9 mm leads. This size worked well for me. The problem was finding a mechanical lead holder that worked for me as well. The Twist-Erase Automatic Pencil was perfect. It had a rubberized grip which eased my grip and it used a white eraser that you could twist up and then twist down. It also took the 0.9mm leads that I love.
I now carry one of these pencils in my shirt pocket, and another in my bag for backup along with a supply of the 0.9mm leads. I like a little softer lead for the the darker mark. I’ve never had a pencil emergency, but I am prepared for one. Remember that being a TechnoWarrior is to be prepared.
