Lately I’ve been looking into severing the last bit of wire from TechnoWarrior Central. That means going totally wireless. It also means using Hulu and other services for watching TV. After the Break I’m going to lay it all on the line for you.
I’ve been traveling more than usual this year and am a bit tired of the sketchy wifi that hotels want to provide with their abysmal prime time connection speeds and all. I thought that it would be cool to carry a device that would provide me with wifi speeds for all of my data needs, and either cancel cable, or go very low rent with either cable, satellite, or some such if I think I need TV.
Here is a list of the things I need in a wireless internet connection:
- It needs to be all I can consume for the 4G connection
- I need to have some kind of portability with the device
- It needs to be reasonable in cost
- Be with a company that might be around over the next five or so years.
- I’d like to be not locked into a contract, so that I can switch to a lower priced competitor, or at least have the leverage to hold over my provider’s head.
Right now there are two people in the San Antonio Area providing 4G service. They are Clear and Sprint. Clear has two options for 4G, one for the home, and a mobile option. There is also the Mobile/home bundle which come to about $55 per month. The only problem with this is that I need two devices for this, and you have to foot the bill for that.
Ahh, you say, but for wireless nirvana isn’t it worth it? I got something waiting in the wings, and it might be worth it. I was looking into Sprint the other day and I ran into their Overdrive mobile hotpsot. If you don’t know what this is, it is a combo wifi and wireless internet connection. It can connect five devices at wifi speed using Sprint’s 4G network. Plus sprint as an all you can eat connection for 59.99 a month. You are limited to 5Gb when you’re using their 3G, but 4G is unlimited.

Now I had no problem with Sprint with the exception that they did not have the iPhone, so moving back to Sprint is probably going to be a good thing. I’m Thinking that the iPhone might be expanded to include other carriers. Imagine 4G internet connection speed where ever I go, and there is coverage. I had digital cell service before it became the standard, so I’m thinking this might be the investment in this technology I need. It will allow me to disconnect my house from any wires but power.
This may take me a while to have ready, so watch for the transfer to occur sometime this year.
