Writing a book with StoryMill

Friday I wrote about the tool I use to write books. There is one more tool that is very good. I will explain why I did not choose it for my writing projects after the break.

The writer’s software I am talking about is Mariner Software’s Storymill.
This software is optimized for writers of books and other large text creations. It is supposed to have been created by a writer and it shows. There are sections for keeping track of characters, plot points, locations and even a time line. With all of this you might be wondering why I don’t use it.

I don’t use it because it gets in my way. I use Scrivener, because it really does not get in my way. There are the necessary index cards and the arrangement of same. It does not force me to adhere to someone else’s workflow.

I know with Storymill I don’t have to use those features that I do not want. All those features, though will be begging me to use them as I write. That’s not how I want to write. I like to have a little bit of mystery to the story. Yes, I plot the chapters, and I know where I need to go for each chapter, but how I get there I leave for the characters. That is how I make writing fun for me. I know I need to get to point A in the plot, but sometimes I get there in an unexpected way.

If you need more structure to your writing experience, then Storymill is a very good software that will help you build the structure to your writing.
