Watching TV without the TV

I just spent a few days not watching TV which is not that hard of a thing. I wanted to know if I could get along with what’s available on the web. This Experiment was intended to determine if the cable was truly necessary, except for it’s web connection. After the break what I found.

I don’t normally watch much television. When I am not teaching during the day, I am working on the site and providing the posts that you enjoy. In the evening I find myself either reading, writing, or enjoying World of Warcraft. There are a few shows and some sports that I find myself watching. The main thing for this experiment was if I could access TV shows, movies, and sports and stream them on my computer.

The answer is a surprising yes. I was able to access the big three and get to their shows. I also was able to get to some shows from other than the big three networks. I was also able to get streaming live sporting events when I wanted, or live. I have come to the conclusion that over the air TV or wire is going to go away. When everyone has very high speed broadband, what’s the incentive to continue with TV on someone else’s schedule?

What did I watch? A lot of Hockey games, I got caught up with Caprica, and Stargate Universe. I also experimented with other shows, like true blood, the Tudors, and the like. I watched more TV than I have become accustomed to. Did I like what I could do? Yes. Is this for everyone? No. To help you I will put out a list of links to some of the services I looked into.

  1. ABC
  2. NBC
  3. CBS
  4. Hulu
  5. Fancast
  6. NHL
  7. MLB
  8. NBA

This is not an exhaustive list by any stretch of the imagination, but I stopped here because I found all that I needed. Have you stopped watching TV? Let us know in the comment section below.
