How I intend to use my iPad and Laptop together.

For the past couple of months I have been using my Laptop as my desktop, and not really missing the desktop. So, I wondered if I would miss the laptop when I got my iPad, and the answer is yes. Here is how I intend to work with an iPad and a Laptop, after the break

The big question is what does a full computer give me that the iPad does not. First is that the laptop is a development machine. I make programs and teach people to program. I therefore need My laptop when I am doing development work, or teaching developers.

The other thing is that my Laptop contains my entire library of videos and music. It’s well backed up, but it does allow me to move videos onto my iPad and off. I intend to get the middle of the road model iPad with 32GB of memory. That should hold my entire library of music, some videos for the trip, and any files that I might be making on the device for Things, and the iWork apps. I will have to swap out videos, but that’s not really that hard of an evolution.

So when will I bring just the iPad and when will I bring the entire gadget zoo? It depends on the stay. If it is an overnighter, then I will leave the Laptop home. I’ll load up the iPad with books and videos. If he trip is more than a couple of nights, then I’ll bring the laptop. I can’t not have the potential to play WOW gone for a couple of days, and I might need to swap out videos.

If I am teaching in San Antonio, then the iPad will come with me, since most training centers have wifi that the instructors and students can use. I imagine that I might be able to use the iPad to replace the physical books I have to carry around for the classes, and that is the thing I want to do the most. If I never have to lug ten pounds of books and materials in the airport, then I will be a happy instructor.
