Don’t like the Cloud Servers?

Yesterday, I did a scathing review of using the Cloud servers for syncing files between two or more computers. What is my solution, if I don’t like the control I give up over “my” files? The answer is interesting, and I present it after the break.

The solution to this conundrum is to use syncing software. The Macintosh has several very good syncing software solutions. Carbon Copy Cloner and Chronosync are two that come to mind quickly. Both will sync two folders on two computers. With just one license you can only use it on one machine, but you can use that one machine as the hub of syncing.

CCC is free, but they do like donations. (Please, if you like CCC, do donate. It helps their morale, and pocketbook.) Chronosync will set you back $40, but that is a buy it once in your lifetime. Econtechnologies has a very simple upgrade policy. You bought it? So, the upgrade is free. No one left behind is what they call it.

Direct syncing between two machines will slow down your network, if you’re like me and move your library of photos around. So I have another solution. Use either of those two pieces of software with a portable hard drive. Now they will set you back some money, especially if you get the 3 interface jobs like the previous link. But it’s actually more storage, in your control, for the price of 50 or 60 GB storage online. That online storage is going to cost you each and every month. Miss a payment and they could flush your files.

As you can tell I am not keen on these Cloud Storage Solutions. I can get a sync software which will sync my computers for a reasonable price, and pay once for it. If I need a portable hard drive solution I can find several devices that can fit, and pay for it once. In either case the files are in my possession.
