Why I am not buying another DVD or Blu-ray disk

I am a believer in the electronic file.  Physical Media is a thing of the past.  I haven’t bought a CD in a long while, and my music collection has done nothing but grow.  After the break, why I am not buying another DVD or Blu-ray disk.

I’ve enjoyed my DVD and Blu-ray collection, and they number in the hundreds.  I’ve noticed some degradation in the the older disks.  I’ve also noticed that the player is starting to get a little flaky.  So, why I am I no longer buying disks?

The first reason is space.  I have my Collection spread out over two bookcases and a DVD rack.  Having Media files on a hard disk takes only the space of the drive, which is a heck of a lot smaller than 2 bookcases and a DVD rack.

The next reason is that I don’t have to worry about the media survival.  Once in electronic format it is permanent with no degradation of the physical disk.  With an all electronic library to preserve it,  I just make a back up copy, something I do on a regular basis any way.  ChronoSync is a cool tool to do this with.

I will need a video bridge to my TV unless I don’t care about watching TV anymore.  I’m getting to like Hulu and some of the network specific streaming services.  The TV is still useful to play the old media, and there are devices that I can use to stream my growing video media.  AppleTV comes to mind, so does SlingBox.

The last reason is rather interesting.  The last reason is the iPad.  The iPad is ultraportable.  I can load it up with my videos that I want to look at during a flight.  It does not play physical media, so why invest in disks of plastic?

There may be other reasons to do this, but right now these are the main reasons I am not buying another DVD or Blu-Ray disk.
