Using Bento for storing software serial numbers

More and more people are not buying physical media when buying software.  They are buying the bytes and downloading them.  This means that you need to store these files and their serial numbers.  I am going to show you how Filemaker’s Bento product can be used to store this information after the break

Open Bento and create a new library.  There is no template so we will have to create the library from scratch.  Call the new library Software Serial Numbers or whatever you want.  In the lower left hand corner is where the fields are made.  Expand the fields list and click on the plus button to create a new field.  the fields we will need as a minimum is Software Name, Purchaser name, an Email field, Serial Number, and a field called Home Page.

Ever field is text with the following exceptions.  The email field is in fact an email field with the name of My email.  The Home Page field is an URL list field.  The reason these fields are stored is that some serial numbers are generated from Names, and email addresses.  So I store this information so if I have to reinstall the product I can.

The serial number is a plain old text field because no matter what you do the serials numbers can always be stores as text.

So, now that you know you can store serial numbers for software in Bento, there are a few things you may wish to do like use an encrypted field for the serial numbers.  Go ahead and play around with the fields.  Add what you wish.  I offer these fields as a bare minimum, but you might want to keep tabs on the cost of the software, and so a currency field might be needs.  Have Fun
