Over the weekend I did two things that have changed my perception about Digital Photography. I come from the film based photography era. Only recently have things changed so as to bring me into the 21st Century, After the break, what has happened that has bought me to this conclusion.
What changed my frame of reference was the idea that I had virtually unlimited digital film. I call space on my hard drive as digital film. I can take silly photographs of things that I really don’t want to have a photo. I started to feel this way when I bought my first digital cameras in the late 90′s. Back then having Compact flash ith a few hundred megabytes was like having rolls of film, and the wherewithal to get them developed.
The thing that changed my perception was that my phone has a pretty good camera. My iPhone 3GS has a pretty good camera. It allows me to take plenty of images. What has changed for me is taking images for recording information. I don’t just take photos to record a memory or person, or event. I now take photos to record information. This revelation has opened up whole new vistas in data handling for me.
What triggered this whole reevaluation was a simple photo of my car’s license plate. I needed to know it recently and I am terrible with car license plates, so I took a picture of the plate. Hardly a big deal, but the next thing that happened this weekend was I took a photograph of a comedy bit.
In the George Bush Airport Terminal A in Houston there is a Bass Pro Shop. Not one of the huge pro shops, just a small store. It struck me dumb. I stood for about five minutes looking at the one store I had not expected to see in any Airport. I promptly got out my iPhone and took a shot of that sign. I could hear Jeff Foxworthy , “If you think having a Bass Pro Shop in the airport is a good thing, then you might be a redneck.”
Those two things have showed me how much my attitude about digital photography has changed, and I wanted to share this with you. Have you had this moment? Then share it with us by leaving a comment.
