I prefer Parallels.

A couple of weeks go I wrote about getting Ubuntu on your Mac and mentioned my preference for VMware Fusion in that regard.  I am now ready to tell you my preference for running Windows XP, after the break.

This was a hard choice, and it came down to one feature that makes Windows programs feel like they are running alongside all my other Mac apps.  This feature is called coherence by Parallels, and Unity view in VMWare Fusion.  Of the two I much prefer the Parallels coherence than VMware’s Unity.  It just felt more solid.

When I tested both products I made sure that the Virtual machines had the same number of processors and memory dedicated to them.  Then I would use the windows Software I installed in each Virtual Machine.  The windows seemed snappier in Parallels than in Fusion, but not by much.

It was easier to make definitive statements as much as a year ago, but VMWare is driving Parallels to up the stakes and this is what competition is all about.  VMWare and Parallels are neck and neck in this race, and Parallels won my race by a nose.

If you are interested in running windows as a guest OS on your Mac, you can’t go wrong in choosing either product.  If you are a Parallels user, then you might prefer Parallels, which happened in my case, I think.  For me, Parallels is for Windows.  VMWare is for running Ubuntu, or any other Linux top drawer Distro.
